EUSA ID Scholarships in Development Studies for South African and European Students, 2015

Applications are invited for the 2nd call of Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Project EUSA ID scholarships in Development Studies. EUSA_ID is a mobility programme offering study, training and research periods in Europe for South African Master and PhD candidates and staff and provides European PhD candidates the opportunity to spend a research period in South Africa. The EUSA_ID partnership will award 66 grants in total to support South African mobility to a European partner university at Master, PhD and staff level. A total of 18 grants will be awarded to support European mobility to a South African partner university. The application deadline is 28 February 2015 (31 January 2015 for the non-degree seeking mobility at Ruhr-University Bochum).

Course Level: Scholarships are available for mobility programmes (study, research and training for South African Master and PhD Candidates and research for European PhD candidates) at one of the European EUSA_ID partner universities (South Africans) or South African partner universities (Europeans).

Scholarship Provider: European Commission within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Partnerships programme

Scholarship can be taken at: South Africa (Europeans) and Europe (for South Africans at partner universities in Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, France and Finland).

Eligibility:
South African mobility to a European partner university:

-South African nationals only
-Master and PhD level applicants who are registered at one of the South African partner universities of EUSA_ID at the time of submitting their application (Target Group 1) or registered at another South African Higher Education Institution which is not a partner of EUSA_ID or have obtained a university degree or equivalent from a South African university (Target Group 2)
-Staff level applicants: Academic or administrative staff members working in or associated to one of the SA South African partner universities of EUSA_ID (Target Group 1) or academic staff members who are working in or associated to another South African Higher Education Institution which is not a partner of EUSA_ID (Target Group 2)
-have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (usually English)
European mobility of PhD candidates to a South African partner university:
-national of one of the eligible European countries only who are registered at one of the European EUSA_ID partner universities at the time of submitting their application to the partnership (Target Group 1) or registered at a European university which is not a partner of EUSA_ID or have obtained a university degree or equivalent from a university of any European country (Target Group 2)
-have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (English)
-EUSA_ID aims at a balanced selection in terms of gender. Therefore women are encouraged to apply!
-Furthermore, South African applicants living in less favourable socio-economic situations, belonging to formerly disadvantaged groups or coming from historically disadvantaged institutions will be given preference in the selection process if the criterion of academic excellence is met.

Citizens of Europe and South Africa can apply for this scholarship.
Scholarship Description: EUSA_ID is a mobility programme offering study, training and research periods in Europe for South African Master and PhD candidates and staff and provides European PhD candidates the opportunity to spend a research period in South Africa. For non-degree seeking mobilities for the MADM at Ruhr University Bochum the application deadline is already 31 January 2015 as the mobility starts in April 2015. South African Master and PhD candidates and staff are invited to apply for a mobility period at one of the European EUSA_ID partner universities while European PhD candidates are invited to apply for a mobility period at one of the South African partner universities.

European Partner Universities: Ruhr University Bochum/Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE), Germany;  Erasmus University Rotterdam/International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Netherlands; University Duisburg/Essen/Institute of Political Science (IfP), Germany; Palacký University/Department of Development Studies, Czech Republic; Sciences Po Bordeaux/University Bordeaux, France; University Paris 1/Department of Economics, France and University of Jyväskylä/Department for Social Sciences and Philosophy, Finland.
South African  Partner Universities: University of the Western Cape/School of Government/Instiute for Social Development (SoG/ISD), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University/Department of Development Studies, University of Cape Town/School of Economics, University of Fort Hare/Department of Development Studies, University of KwaZulu Natal/School of Development Studies and University of Limpopo/Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership.

Number of award(s): The EUSA_ID partnership will award 66 grants in total to support South African mobility to a European partner university at Master, PhD and staff level. A total of 18 grants will be awarded to support European mobility to a South African partner university.
Duration of award(s): The duration of the mobility periods varies from 1 – 3 months for staff mobility, 6 – 24 months for Master mobility and 12 – 36 months for PhD mobility, depending on the programme of choice and the call. The mobility is limited to the PhD level and the duration of mobility varies from 12 – 24 months. Mobility periods of selected candidates will usually start at the beginning of the academic year at the hosting institution (April 2015 for the MADM, not before July 2015 for the other programmes, usually approximately September 2015). You will need to start your mobility in any case before 1 January 2016, and end your scholarship before the project end date mid-2017.

What does it cover? The Erasmus Mundus scholarship for South African & European grantees includes:

-Subsistence allowance (to cover your living expenses including accommodation): 1000 EUR per month for master students; 1500 EUR per month for PhD students and 2500 EUR per month for staff
-Insurance coverage (health, travel, accident, third party liability).
-Participation fees (if applicable) Maximum amount covered = 3000 EUR
-One return ticket

Selection Criteria: Not Known
Notification: The selection of candidates will take place in March 2015 (for the MADM already in February 2015), selection results will be published in April (mid of February for the MADM) 2015. Follow-up communication with selected candidates will start immediately after publication of the selection results.

For the non-degree seeking mobility at Ruhr-University Bochum the application deadline is 31 January 2015, as the mobility already starts in April 2015.
